From June until October the waves are pumping and you can surf up to eight feet in the air on some days and if you go on a short three wheeler driver from Jetwing Surf you can see Sri Lanka’s number one surfing champion Lucky Lakshitha training. Lucky bases himself in Arugam Bay during the season, even though he is from Weligama. An incredible surfer to watch and learn from as he can ride with optimum power and control whether he is doing a bottom turn, cut backs, or rebound off the lips.
“Our best surfers ride the waves like a bullet,” says Hiran, the President of “The Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka” and Recreational Manager of Jetwing Surf. He believes that in time with more training opportunities and competitions like the surfing event taking place in the middle of September at Arugam Bay, which in years to come surfing will become a major Olympic Sport.
Surfers believe “When you have to choose between two roads, take the harder, for this is where you will learn most about yourself”
The holistic and hedonistic life of the surfer could not be better served than at Jetwing Surf the first upmarket resort in the area, as there is everything here for the lover of sport to great food fresh from the sea. For the more wild at heart that combine sport with living full throttle there are lots of exciting experiences run by the hotel each week, more than thirty five excellent places to eat out in Arugam Bay, interesting shops including Stick No Bills surfing posters and fun places to listen to chilled music at Mambos, and Blue Whale is always good for a pool party. For world-class food then lunch or dinner at Jetwing Surf on your room patio, by the pool or in the restaurant is a must as the food is avant-garde in style and still one of my great memories of a superb stay at an upmarket hotel that caters for all.
